Release of BTW video! Epic!

As widely noted by Gaga on her Twitter account, the video for Born This Way was released at 11 AM EST today! I just saw it now, and I was impressed with the visual effects, and the symbolic triangle at the beginning and the end of the video.  I especially liked the speech Gaga gave at the beginning regarding her outlook on living without prejudice, etc. Of course, Gaga then gets into the actual song, and she also doesn’t disappoint in this regard, as she performs with her dancers against a pitch black background.

Gaga also wears the same ponytail as she did on the Grammys in bits of the video too, along with a tuxedo and a made-up “skeleton look”.  She gets a bit touchy-feely with a man also with the same “skeleton-look” makeup.  It ends with the same triangle as previously noted but with Gaga blowing a bubble gum bubble, which made me laugh, as it seemed whimsical.

As others on Youtube have noted, the video seemed a bit like a mini horror film with people criticizing Gaga for being a “weirdo”.  Yes, I also agree that Gaga can seem “creepy” at times, but as most little monsters know, she is considered a performance artist and hence, she tries to emit whatever emotion she is feeling, or messsage she wants to convey at the moment through her looks, music, stage props, etc.

The whole message of BTW is loving yourself no matter what you look like, believe in, etc. so if Gaga looked “gorgeous”, wouldn’t that be counter to what she is expressing here? Through this “ugly” look, I strongly believe that she is telling everyone to love yourself warts and all.

Lastly, I also noticed that some have noted the “devil worship” apparent in BTW’s video as well as the horror elements, and how this is going to affect kids. I think kids aren’t as stupid as we think, but what do you think?

Here is the video for BTW:

Gaga’s Big Night at the Grammys and on 60 Minutes

Wow, Gaga did it last night!  She won 3 grammys, arrived in typical “Gaga” style in an egg, and performed Born This Way for the first time! I thought her performance for BTW was awesome, as it was energizing and the end was good with her playing a bit on the pipe organ.

Though this may sound weird to some, I thought it was even cool to see Donnie Wahlberg, of New Kids on the Block, present a grammy to Gaga, as Gaga opened for NKOTB in the latter’s reunion tour back in 2008. It seemed like Gaga had come full circle here with her accepting the award from Donnie.  A lot of people still underestimate NKOTB and laugh when they hear that Gaga opened for them in the past, but you have to keep in mind that she was an unknown back then and you gotta start somewhere; what better place to start than NKOTB’s sellout reunion tour at the time? Donnie, himself, was ecstatic to present to Gaga, as he  tweeted, “For me, having known GaGa before “THE FAME”, this was a great moment!……What a great moment to hand that Grammy to GaGa and have her say “thanks Donnnnnnnie” in that NY accent! Very proud!”.   Here is the visual proof of his euphoria for Gaga:

Before the Grammys aired though, I hope little monsters everywhere had a chance to catch Gaga’s interview with Andersoon Cooper on 60 Minutes, it was insightful to hear Gaga remark about how she thinks people “always wonder how she is going to look when she dies”.  You could also see how much of an inspiration Gaga is to people, as they showed footage of how emotional some little monsters got at the Monster Ball when they hear Gaga’s messages of empowerment onstage.

Gaga looked eye-catching as she spoke to Anderson as well, with her Cleopatra-like eyeliner and nude bodysuit near the end, but also when she was in NY clad in leather.  In case order you missed it though, there was a message at the end of the broadcast that stated there is extra footage of Gaga’s interview on the CBS website.

Congratulations also to the other Grammy winners last night, there honestly were some great performances as well from other artists, such as Eminem, Rihanna, and even Gwyneth Paltrow!

Happy Valentine’s Day to all as well!

Born This Way is Finally Released!

Well, little monsters, after 5 months of agonizing waiting, Gaga’s Born This Way was finally released this morning!

This seems like a holiday for little monsters everywhere with the release of BTW, but apparently, it was moved up to coincide with the anniversary of Alexander McQueen’s death a year ago; this was very nice of Gaga, as she was quite close to this talented designer.

I was super excited to hear BTW and I was a bit surprised at the beginning to discover that it’s a dance song, as I have to admit that I was expecting a slow song like Speechless, due to the serious nature of BTW’s lyrics and the manner in which Gaga belted out a few lyrics of the track earlier at the VMAs last fall.

The next thing I noticed was Gaga’s talking to the listener, just like she does on previous tracks such as Lovegame and Dance in the Dark.  Although Gaga has been criticized before for “speaking out” like Madonna in such tracks, I still thought it was cool, because it further adds to what she has to express throughtout the song.

When I reached the chorus, however, I was a bit disappointed.  I thought that it was quite reminiscent of Madonna’s Express Yourself! It seemed as if Gaga was singing the lyrics of BTW to the tune of Express Yourself.  As you can guess, the internet, especially Twitter, is ablaze with comments on how people cannot contain their disappointment with how BTW turned out to be and the hype over a ”rip-off” of Madonna.

Fortunately, I still like the positive message within BTW and after a few more times listening to it, I am sure it will grow on me, as Gaga seems to be a master of creating tracks that stick like glue in your head! Time Magazine’s Newsfeed also expresses a similar sentiment along with the song itself.

Out of the news articles I read online this morning though, I liked the thoughts expressed online in NyMag, as the author states, ”I guess I’d forgotten that this is the thing to do when you’ve reached the top, and everyone is celebrating you and awaiting your next move: Just sort of celebrate back. “Born This Way” is loose and uncomplicated and fundamentally just fun; it uses fans’ goodwill toward Gaga to throw a party instead of an art happening. After a year of everyone up to Camille Paglia bringing all kinds of intense critical thought to everything Gaga does — what does she mean, what is she saying, what is her effect on the culture — this is smart: Come raging back with something simple, gleeful, and straightforward.”  This sums up BTW nicely, as it really should be seen as a celebration of Gaga’s passion for her little monsters and her instilling confidence in her fans to be themselves with no fear.  Furthermore, maybe it’s a satire of how people have deemed Gaga to be a “copycat” of Madonna?

In a way then, perhaps people should be less critical of Gaga, and celebrate BTW for what it is, an “anthem” for loving yourself as is, and what does it matter if it happens to sound like Madge’s Express Yourself? In my opinion, every artist has been influenced by someone else, and imitation is the sincerest form of flattery, right? Since this is only the first song we’ve heard from Gaga’s upcoming album, let’s hope that the rest of the songs will be just as good, but further explore the creativity of Gaga to silence the naysayers!

Gaga on 60 Minutes this Sunday before the Grammys

Well, it’s less than 24 hours before Born This Way is officially released! Believe me, there’s loads of excitement at the moment! Just this morning on Twitter, “BornThisWayFriday” was trending.

In the midst of this excitement over Born This Way though, I wanted to remind everyone that Gaga is interviewed by Anderson Cooper on 60 minutes this Sunday at 7 PM EST before the Grammys (check your local listings for the channel), and you DO NOT want to miss this, as Gaga takes Anderson to her old pad in NY before she was famous and she is refused entry by the current tenant there! It was pretty hilarious, but Gaga took it all in stride, as she then proceeded to just carry on talking to Anderson outside the suite instead.

You can see an excerpt of the interview here.

Cover Art of Born This Way “Rips Off” Kylie Minogue?

Well, it’s only two more days before Born This Way is officially released! I cannot wait to hear it! In the midst of this excitement though, the cover art for the single has been released as well, and according to Entertainment Weekly, it’s been claimed to be a “rip off” of Kylie Minogue’s 2007 release, 2 Hearts.

I see some of the similarities e.g. the dramatic eyeliner on both women, but I think that’s where the similarities end.  Gaga’s cover is in black and white, Kylie’s in colour, while the latter is more of a close-up whereas Gaga’s is not.  Not trying to favour Gaga more, but I think it’s starting to get really silly as to how people seem to jump on an artist for seemingly “copying” someone else for something so minor.  IMO, dramatic eyeliner is a look that both male and female artists have taken on in the past, some more dramatic than others.  Perhaps people should just relax and appreciate each artist based on their own individual merits instead!

Here is the video of Kylie’s 2 Hearts (remix version):

Born This Way Released Earlier Than Expected!

Good news for little monsters everywhere! Born This Way is going to be released earlier than expected i.e. from the 13th to the 11th! I was so overjoyed to hear this, because now we get to hear it in advance of when Gaga is expected to first perform it at the Grammys this Sunday.

According to Celebrity Gossip, “The brand new video (for Born This Way), which will be released this Friday (February 11) is “Gaga’s love letter to the homosexuality community,” according to Hollywoodlife.com.  Word has it, the  singer also tackles the “Don’t Ask Don’t Tell” policy she was so vocal about in 2010.”

Also, if you already ‘like’ Gaga on Facebook, you can also RSVP for the official  release of Born This Way  this Friday!

“Born This Way” Offends Some, Participate in the Gaga Dots Project!

Hello everyone, I am sincerely sorry for not posting in the last month, as I have been very busy and just didn’t have the time to blog on Gaga: no disrespect to her though.  I hope everyone had a great holiday season!

As you can guess, a lot has happened with Gaga recently. I’m sure that a lot of you little monsters out there probably already know about Gaga’s events over the past month, so rather than regurgitate them, I am going to just start fresh as of today.  One thing worth mentioning though, is that apparently some people, namely organizations, have been deeply offended by the lyrics to Born This Way.  According to Hollywood News, ”Some Arizona Latino groups like Chicanos Unidos Arizona and MECHA are reportedly upset with her use of the words ‘Chola’ and ‘Orient’ in her lyrics.  The groups reportedly find this to be racist and derogatory as the words have negative connotations. Lady Gaga has yet to respond to these claims.”

As a few readers have pointed out in the comments section of said article, I also agree that these “derogatory” terms have been taken out of context; I don’t think Gaga meant to further “perpetuate” racism and homophobia through Born This Way.  When I read the lyrics on Gaga’s Twitter account, my first impression is that it revolves around the whole concept of accepting oneself for who one is.  Don’t get me wrong, I am not implying that it promotes narcissism, but rather, positive embracement of oneself, “warts and all”.  Although I have yet to hear the song, I think it’s a song of empowerment for EVERYONE, and not just a “gay anthem”, as some have hyped it up to be; it’s a great mantra that all should follow, especially when one is down.

Thus, I am definitely looking forward to Gaga’s debut performance of Born This Way on the Grammys on Feb. 13! On a lighthearted note, I just found out about a project called Gaga Dots that all of you little monsters should participate in, as you can be part of an artistic tribute for Gaga.   You can read all about it on the San Francisco Chronicle, which reports that there is competition between Gaga fans and Michael Jackson fans on whose tribute will reach the million dots first, but it’s silly, as this is probably just intended to create more publicity for said projects.  Both artists are awesome, so why adopt a “us versus them” attitude? If you want to cut right to the chase though, head over to www.GagaDots.com, and sign up to be part of this milestone project, I did already!

“Don’t Ask Don’t Tell” is Finally Repelled!

Just wanted to quickly mention that it’s wonderful that “Don’t Ask Don’t Tell” was finally repelled! As you can guess, Gaga who wholeheartedly supported its repel, is tickled pink about this, as she tweeted that she wished she was back home, so she could have a parade to celebrate!  Some people believe that Gaga is “using” the gay community for her own gain, but do you guys think that Gaga ”deserves” some credit for DADT’s overturn though?

Gaga is MTV’s Woman of the Year

Congratulations to Gaga for winning MTV’s Woman of the Year, while Kanye West is their Man of the Year.  This is great, considering the competition was pretty stiff on both sides!

Completion of Gaga’s Wax Figures, Gaga is Billboard’s 2010 Entertainer of the Year!

Hey everyone, I am so sorry for not posting in the past few weeks, but I just wanted to quickly congratulate Gaga on her win as Billboard’s 2010 Entertainer of the Year as well as the completion of her phenomenal 8 Madame Tussauds wax figures! The Guardian features a photo of two of the wax figures in Amsterdam, Netherlands; they model two of her “early” looks.
